1st Year Anniversary Party
A Thank You Note for Our First Year: Discretion Underground
If you have found your way through the green door at 118 N College Ave, Suite 8 in Newton, stepped inside, knocked on the second door, and let yourself “step back into time” with us, then you have already been part of the story I am trying to tell here.
This post is simple: thank you.
Opening Discretion Underground has been equal parts joy, nerves, exhaustion, and gratitude. When you build something that is intentionally hidden, a speakeasy that depends on trust, curiosity, and community, you never really know how people will respond. Over this first year, you showed us, again and again, that Newton is full of people who want connection, creativity, and a place that feels like an experience, not just a stop on the way home.
You made it real
A “membership style” speakeasy idea can sound like a daydream until real people walk in, bring friends, ask questions, share stories, and turn a room into a living thing. Every smile at the door, every quiet “this is so cool,” every first sip of a cocktail you had never tried before, all of it built momentum. You gave this place a heartbeat.
The nights we will never forget
When I look back, the year is measured less by dates and more by moments, the kind you feel in your chest the next day when you are cleaning up and you catch yourself smiling.
We started by gathering around what we love: good pours and good conversation, with tastings like Dynamis Wine Tasting (June 29, 2025) and Bear Fight Tasting (July 27, 2025) that reminded us how quickly strangers can become familiar faces.
Then came the nights where the room transformed:
Buster Keaton Silent Movie Viewing (September 21, 2025)
Roper Romp 2025 (September 27, 2025)
Rocky Horror Picture Show Movie Night (October 26, 2025)
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Movie (November 30, 2025)
Prohibition Repeal Party (December 5, 2025)
New Year’s Eve Masquerade Party (December 13, 2025)
Marx Brothers Movie Showing (January 18, 2026)
Robert Burns Supper (February 3, 2026)
Italian Wine Tasting and Lasagna Cook-Off (February 22, 2026)
These events were not “content” for a calendar, they were proof that Discretion Underground could be what we hoped it would be: a place where people show up, lean in, and have fun in a way that feels a little different from everywhere else.
Thank you for trusting something different
Thank you to everyone who chose to spend a date night here, celebrate a birthday here, bring out-of-town friends here, or make this your regular place to exhale. Thank you to the people who came to one event and then came back again, and again, and again. Thank you for telling others, for posting, for encouraging us when we were tired, and for being patient while we learned what works and what needs to be better.
We are still learning. Still refining. Still trying to earn your time every time you walk in.
Here is to year two
If the first year taught me anything, it is that Discretion Underground is not the cocktails, the door, or the concept. It is the people who choose to be part of it.
So from the bottom of my heart: thank you for making our first year possible. We cannot wait to keep building this with you.
See you at the green door.
